The UK Press Does the US Press’ Job
Thursday, October 30th, 2008James Bone in Boston, Rob Crilly in Kogelo and Ben Macintyre
Barack Obama has lived one version of the American Dream that has taken him to the steps of the White House. But a few miles from where the Democratic presidential candidate studied at Harvard, his Kenyan aunt and uncle, immigrants living in modest circumstances in Boston, have a contrasting American story.
Zeituni Onyango, the aunt so affectionately described in Mr Obama’s best-selling memoir Dreams from My Father, lives in a disabled-access flat on a rundown public housing estate in South Boston.
A second relative believed to be the long-lost “Uncle Omar” described in the book was beaten by armed robbers with a “sawed-off rifle” while working in a corner shop in the Dorchester area of the city. He was later evicted from his one-bedroom flat for failing to pay $2,324.20 (£1,488) arrears, according to the Boston Housing Court.
iAMbs adds: Apparently the US press is too busy digging into Joe the Plumber’s life to find out how Obama treats his own family. Seems Obama expects the taxpayers to take care of them for him.
Mormons face flak for backing Prop. 8

“Don’t think they’re all against you,” said Alonso, 27, explaining that she was Mormon and that despite her religious leaders’ support of a ballot measure banning same-sex marriage, she was actively opposed.
As she walked away, she said, “I’m afraid that a gay or lesbian friend might hear that I’m Mormon and think that I want to tear their marriage apart.”
Obama Affinity to Marxists Dates Back to College Days
Tuesday, October 28th, 2008By Bill Sammon
But Obama himself acknowledges that he was drawn to socialists and even Marxists as a college student. He continued to associate with Marxists later in life, even choosing to launch his political career in the living room of a self-described Marxist, William Ayers, in 1995, when Obama was 34.
Obama’s affinity for Marxists began when he attended Occidental College in Los Angeles.
Voter rolls stuffed with dead and absent registrants
Tuesday, October 28th, 2008By Bert Case
Sue Sautermeister, First District Election Commissioner in Madison County, tried to purge the rolls, but ran into trouble when it was discovered it takes a vote of three of the five election commissioners and the purge cannot take place within 90 days of a federal election.
Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann is the first to admit the situation with voter registration in this state is terrible.
Almost Everyone Would Do Better Under the McCain Health Plan
Monday, October 27th, 2008By ROBERT CARROLL
The McCain health-care insurance tax credit may well be one of the most misunderstood proposals of this presidential election. Barack Obama has been ruthless in his attacks. But the tax credit is highly progressive and will provide a powerful incentive for people to purchase health insurance. These features under normal circumstances should endear Democrats to the proposal.
There has been a lot of rhetoric and misstatements, but what exactly does Sen. McCain have in mind? He would replace the current income tax exclusion for employer-sponsored health insurance with a refundable tax credit — $5,000 for those who purchase family coverage and $2,500 for individual coverage. Mr. McCain would also reform insurance markets to stem the growth in health insurance premiums.
Campaign Cash
Monday, October 27th, 2008
It means a huge gamble Obama took last spring has paid off, and now every succeeding presidential candidate will have to calculate the same odds. Obama had promised to accept public financing if Sen. John McCain did, and then beguiled by his ability to raise money, he broke that commitment, becoming the first presidential candidate since the campaign reforms were enacted in the aftermath of the Watergate scandal to reject public money. McCain regularly chastises Obama for breaking his word but politically Obama would have been foolish if he hadn’t and even McCain’s fellow Republicans are now beginning to second-guess him.
