Thanksgiving Day
A day specially set aside by America to recall earlier years, times and moments of gratitude in addition to our usual thankfulness for the indescribable bounty of being alive and the moment-to-moment wonder of being born (or naturalized) American!
America’s history as the oldest constitutional republic ever is astonishing, but the ideals we hold, the hopes we share, the values we uphold and the rights and responsibilities we, as Americans, cherish… are nothing short of marvelous! For these alone we are rightly grateful.
But as Americans we also have the freedom to make mistakes, and to learn from our efforts and errors. This freedom, denied to citizens and slaves of the Nazi Reich and the Soviet Socialist Republics, is a gracious, wonderful freedom. In the Reich and the Republics, citizens were ALWAYS subject to imprisonment or death for having made a simple, unplanned error or having been perceived as having made one.
For perhaps, said their comrade government elite, that wasn’t an error, wasn’t a mistake but a deliberate counter-revolutionary act against the State! And THAT kind of thinking sent millions to an early grave and more to the hell of the Gulags.
Not being subject to midnite knocks at our door from the Secret Police, is reason aplenty to be thankful, just as having no Gulags in America and no stomach for developing them is another reason for thankfulness.
I can criticize George Dubya for his ineptitude and reticence at securing America’s borders, but such criticism will not land me or my family in a rape-room or torture facility.
We can criticize our Dear Leader as if he were… well, a REAL “Dear Leader” like Kim, Jong-il. L’il Kim HAS concentration camps for political prisoners; glass-walled gas chambers there, so imprisoned families can watch doomed parents using their last breaths to try and save their gassed children… gassed all, for ‘Crimes Against the State’.
What tongue can voice my thanks that North America is NOT like North Korea?
Suffice it to say that as America continues to develop the two pillars upholding the canopy of Justice, -Reward and Punishment- America will develop in well-being, prosperity and humane manifestations.
And for that, I am truly thankful!
Happy Thanksgiving, one and all!
